Once the Agency accepts the Initial Project Description and posts it on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry:
- 180 calendar days: The 180-day time limit for the Planning phase starts
- 90-day extension: The Agency may extend the 180-day Planning phase by up to 90 days at the request of another jurisdiction to enable cooperation with that jurisdiction
- By the end of 180 days: The Notice of Commencement is posted on the Registry

Key Steps and Timelines
Substitution : If the Agency receives a request from another jurisdiction to substitute the process for an impact assessment, the Request for Substitution will be posted to the Registry with an invitation to the public to provide their comments. The Agency will consider comments received and post the Substitution Decision and the reasons for the decision to the Registry before the end of the 180 day Planning phase.
